About Me
safety gear for ATVs

Some of the best times my family has had include going out into the wild on our ATVs and UTVs. I know that if I want to cheer up one of my teenagers, that all I have to do is go to the garage, start up a machine and rev it up a few times. As soon as they hear the rumbling of the engine, their troubles fade away and we head out into the woods for a ride. Safety is the most important part of riding for our family. We wear all of the latest safety gear. Find out about safety gear here on my blog.

What You Need To Know To Buy A Dirt Bike

Martin Castillo

When purchasing dirt bikes, it's essential to understand what exactly it is you'll be doing with yours. There are three primary kinds of dirt bikes for sale: motocross, enduro and trials bikes. It's also a good idea to find a model that's suited to you as a rider. Keep track of these issues as you look at the different models on the market.

Types of Dirt Bikes

Motocross bikes are typically designed for use on prepared courses, and they're the one you'll typically see in competition. There are arena versions of motocross bikes that are designed for performing tricks or running courses that have aggressive aerials. A standard motocross bike is meant to handle the ups and downs of going over small hits, taking curves on dirt and going through minimal amounts of mud or water.

Endure bikes are intended for use in real-world terrain. When used in competition, they're designed to handle basic off-road tasks, such as getting across shallow creeks and mud puddles. They're not ideal when confronted with any kinds of obstacles. Any vehicle meant for a lengthy race in rugged conditions, like a desert, is considered an extreme edition.

Trials bikes are intended for maneuverability and performance on steep grades. Riders usually need to have a lot of skill, although the bikes are designed to maximize what a capable motorcyclist can get out them. This means they can be quickly wheeled around within tight turning radius.

Most dirt bikes for sale on the consumer market are variants of these three types of competition bikes. Smaller models intended for use by children are called pit bikes.

Know Thy Tires

Just as there are three common kinds of dirt bikes, there are also three types of tires.

Motocross tire patterns tend to be very knobby, and they're designed to dig into the soft dirt that often appears on courses. Off-road tires and trail tires employ very tall knobs to ensure that traction is ideal on most terrains. Dual-sport tires are generally approved for use on roadways.

Rules of the Road

The majority of dirt bikes are not road-legal in their stock versions. If you intend to take your ride out on the road, it will have to be inspected by a state police or DOT official. Even if you intend to just zip a mile up a two-lane road to hit a trail, your vehicle should be licensed.
